Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel Honors SGI President for His Peace Efforts
On April 3, 2014, the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College presented Daisaku Ikeda, SGI president, with the Global Ambassador for Cultural Diversity and Education Award in recognition of his longstanding contributions to peace. Lawrence Edward Carter Sr., dean of the chapel, Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King III, eldest son of Martin Luther King Jr., attended the ceremony, together with representatives from the Council for a Parliament of the World’s Religions. SGI Vice President Shigeo Hasegawa received the award in proxy on behalf of the SGI President. The presentation followed an earlier ceremony of the bestowal of the Gandhi, King, Ikeda Community Builders Prize upon the noted historian of world religions Dr. Karen Armstrong in recognition for her efforts "to guide the world to mutual respect and peace based on a commitment and action for compassion."
