Brazilian writer and journalist Austregésilo de Athayde (1898–1993) was admired throughout his long life and career, in which he made it his priority to vigorously promote the twin concerns of social justice and human rights. After a distinguished career at the UN, he became President of the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 1959, continuing to occupy that post until his death in 1993. His published works include Histórias Amargas.
