Drawn up under Ikeda's direction, the SGI Charter reaffirms the worldwide lay Buddhist movement's core purposes and principles, including its commitment to peace, culture and education based on respect for the sanctity of life; its ideal of global citizenship (i.e., a sense of global responsibility); its commitment to religious freedom; and its focus on environmental protection. It also ensures the independence and autonomy of the SGI's constituent organizations in accordance with the conditions prevailing in each country.
