“The Challenge of Global Empowerment” Proposal

"The Challenge of Global Empowerment: Education for a Sustainable Future," was issued in August 2002, coinciding with the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg. Ikeda proposes that education should be the basis of progress toward a sustainable future and suggests three key themes for the UN Decade: learning, reflection and empowerment, and cites the Earth Charter as a key educational resource. "Education," Ikeda writes, "must inspire the faith that each of us has both the power and the responsibility to effect positive change on a global scale."
